Finally! I have mentioned across social media that I’d eventually post some DIY recipes for you all, and lo and behold, it’s happening! To kick things off, I wanted to tell you all that I have never been much of a DIYer when it comes to skincare. It wasn’t until my son needed extra support for his skin (which wasn’t always so baby-soft), and exhausting all store-bought options, that I decided to make my own. He NEEDED a way to relieve his temptations to scratch, which often turned into horrible scabbing. Not only did this little baby lotion experiment launch our family into looking into essential oils, but it’s also what made me a believer in their health benefits (I’m usually a hater/skeptic). Oh, and an extra bonus, is that we’ve saved a little cash by making our little lotion, rather than emptying our wallets in the search for something effective! Who doesn’t love saving money?
Let me warn you, friends. If you don’t use therapeutic grade essential oils (Young Living is by far the best), then this WILL NOT WORK. I repeat, this WILL NOT WORK. How do I know? Well, I tried it with store bought oils, and that was a waste! For details on that, look about 1/2 way down on this page. If you need to get started with Young Living, you can also do so through that link.
Before I get into details, let me put this out there. I’m not a medical professional of any sort and by all means, consult the experts if need be! I’m just a mom, drinking coffee, looking for answers, k?
Now, for the recipe!
Here’s what you’ll need:
1 small glass/jar (to hold about 1/2 cup)
Lavender essential oil
Tea Tree essential oil
Frankincense essential oil
Spoon or spatula
Step 1: Scoop out that coconut oil!
Open up your jar, add about 1/3-1/2 cup of coconut oil. I usually do just over 1/3 cup at a time, just because it’s easier to mix up. This particular oil is just from Target, but I’ve used other organic brands as well!
Step 2: Add your essential oils.
Now, this can vary. My son’s skin NEEDED help to support the health of his skin, as well as maintain in. So, my concoction consists of 15 drops of lavender, 15 drops of tea tree, and 10 drops of Frankincense. You can adjust with your own needs, but that’s what has worked for us. You’re welcome to message me to chat more on this!
Step 3: Whip it up!
Use your utensils to mix everything up! It should get a little creamy during the process, which is just fine. To make sure that the oils get distributed well, I usually spend a good minute or two just mixing!
Step 4: Massage it on.
So, if you know about coconut oil, you know that it spreads pretty easily. It takes very little, to go a very long way. Put about a dime sized dab in your palms, then massage it into your little one’s skin (or yours…I won’t lie, I used it). I feel like it’s more effective to massage in, than to just apply it onto his skin too rapidly. Use more as needed, if there are several spots demanding attention. For us, this was done 3 times per day (and sometimes still is!). For YOU, apply according to your needs!
Step 5: Store it safely!
This might be a no-brainer for some of you, but just in case, let me remind you! Coconut oil turns to complete liquid in heat, and also, the essential oils do a bit better in cool, dark places. Do yourself a favor, and find a safe place for it (maybe your medicine cabinet or bathroom vanity?), to make sure it lasts!
How easy was that?! Seriously, the baby lotion is oh-so-simple, and a few bottles of oils will last FOREVER. Both lavender and Frankincense are available in the Young Living Premium Start Kit (over $300 of product, for only $160), which is how I ended up ordering my oils. Why? Well, the Frankincense alone would have been $39.14, then another $50 for the lavender and tea tree, so I got the whole kit that came with a diffuser and 11 other oils instead! Also included, is a WHOLESALE membership, meaning 24% off of everything from that point forward. Win/win! PS- The diffuser that we use in the twins’ room is also a humidifier, which supports their skin as well! My son’s skin has definitely seen the benefits of our DIY baby lotion, and he’s looking nice and smooth these days. Check out these faces!
